Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution Pitch Black Build & Battle Box, a 40-card prerelease-style kit

Delta Reign prerelease events start October 24, which gives you a chance to play with the new Mega Rayquaza ex set about two weeks before it reaches store shelves on November 6. In this guide we cover the key dates, what is inside the Delta Reign Build & Battle Box, how the 40-card prerelease format works, and how to practice with Build & Battle Boxes from earlier sets.

Key Delta Reign dates

  • October 24, 2026: Pokémon says select Play! Pokémon Stores will begin selling the Mega Evolution—Delta Reign Build & Battle Box at prerelease events starting this date.
  • October 24 to November 1: the prerelease window, according to Cardrake's set tracker. Pokémon's own event listings show sanctioned Delta Reign prereleases on dates across that range.
  • November 5: Cardrake reports the set arrives in Pokémon TCG Live a day ahead of the physical launch.
  • November 6, 2026: the official worldwide release date for Mega Evolution—Delta Reign.

To find an event near you, Pokémon points players to the Event Locator on pokemon.com. Prereleases are run by individual stores, so check entry details, times, and sign-up rules with the store before you go.

What is in the Build & Battle Box

The Build & Battle Box is the prerelease kit. According to Pokémon, each one contains:

  • Four Mega Evolution—Delta Reign booster packs
  • One 40-card, ready-to-play deck featuring key cards from current and prior expansions
  • One of four unique foil promo cards: Masquerain, Magmortar, Enamorus, or Kommo-o

Cardrake lists these promos as MEP 111 to 114 and notes that the promo in each box is random. If you want all four for your binder, plan on trading or buying singles rather than opening box after box.

Pokémon says Build & Battle Boxes will also be available for purchase when the expansion officially launches, so missing a prerelease does not mean missing the product. One tracker, Cardrake, lists a later general-retail date of November 20 for this box, so timing at some retailers may differ.

How the prerelease format works

Prerelease games are smaller and faster than standard play. Instead of a 60-card deck with six Prize cards, each player uses a 40-card deck and sets aside four Prize cards at the start of play. Pokémon describes the limited card pool as an opportunity for creative deck-building, and the event as a good fit for both new players and seasoned Trainers who want to try the set early.

In practice, you start from the 40-card deck in your box, open your four packs, and swap in the new cards that fit your strategy. We suggest bringing sleeves and a small deck box so the cards you pull stay protected through a full afternoon of games.

The four promo decks at a glance

Pokémon's prerelease preview outlines how each promo Pokémon anchors its deck:

  • Masquerain: a Bug deck built around the Bug Out attack, which first appeared in Pitch Black with Sizzlipede. Masquerain needs just one Grass Energy for the attack, and the Item card Sacred Ash returns bugs from the discard pile to the deck so you can keep attacking.
  • Magmortar: its Buddy Boost Ability attaches Basic Fire and Lightning Energy to Magmortar or Electivire. Pokémon says it is best used to power up Electivire, whose Voltaic Hammer does 60 damage for every Energy card you discard.
  • Enamorus: its Incarnate Solidarity Ability, shared with Thundurus, Landorus, and Tornadus, lets you ignore Colorless Energy in attack costs. That lets Landorus do 110 damage for one Fighting Energy.
  • Kommo-o: Beat Scales attaches Energy to Dragon-type Pokémon, and Hammer In does 170 damage. Druddigon is suggested as a second attacker.

What else is in Delta Reign

Pokémon lists the set at over 135 cards, with more than 20 Trainer cards and more than 35 cards with special illustrations. Mega Rayquaza ex leads the set, alongside Mega Golurk ex, Mega Malamar ex, and Mega Golisopod ex. Bulbapedia notes a new mechanic called Legendary Stadiums: pairs of Stadium cards with combined illustrations, and any pack that contains one includes both halves of the pair. Pokémon's card preview also highlights Legendary Pyroduct, one of the first two-card Stadiums, which shuts off Abilities on both players' Evolution Pokémon while it is in play.

If you are planning ahead for launch day, the standard Elite Trainer Box includes nine booster packs, a full-art foil Kyogre promo, 65 sleeves, and 40 Energy cards, according to Best Buy's product listing.

Practice before the prerelease

Delta Reign is not on our shelves yet, but the Build & Battle Box format is the same across sets, so an earlier box is a low-cost way to learn 40-card play before October 24. The Masquerain deck even builds on a Pitch Black mechanic.

We will update our Pokémon TCG release calendar if any Delta Reign dates change.
